In the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament, you will find that this recipe is given from God to the prophet Ezekiel. He is prescribed to lay on his side and eat only this bread, in certain quantities and at certain times, for 390 days. It is a severe example of bearing the burden of punishment for the house of Israel and their disobedience. In his obedience, Ezekiel is humbled and shamed; though not defiled.
This bread was for survival. The simple nutrients sustained Ezekiel in body, as God sustained him in spirit. At Amen Bakehouse, in my process of creating this bread to share with the world, I have chosen a recipe that includes milk and honey. "The land of milk and honey" appears over 20 times in the Bible: symbolising the provision, prosperity and sweetness waiting in the Promised Land for those who walk faithfully. If we had to survive on bread alone, this sourdough Ezekiel bread would be the recipe. But, thankfully, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God" Matthew 4:4. I pray over each step of preparing the grains, and my kitchen is filled with worship music. I make this bread as an invitation for body and spirit to receive the nourishment that God has for us.
